100 Years ofOur Stories

The history of The University of Baltimore is made up of thousands of memories and moments. There’s the 1933 commencement when the first mother to earn her law degree brought her son to the celebration. There was the 1961 NCAA soccer championship, and the fact that it was just the first. There were multiple times when the University responded to changing careers and demands, like in 1939 when we had had aircraft engineering and 1999 when we added the online MBA that’s still one of the best in the country. Over our Centennial year, we’ll dive more deeply into the stories that made us who we are, that show what’s changed and what hasn’t, and that will strengthen our pride in this great city institution.

A CENTURY OF PROMISE AND PROGRESS

Three pillars uphold our first century: Transformative Learning, Academic Excellence and Civic Engagement.

As we begin our Centennial year at The University of Baltimore, we know we have so much to celebrate. Our archives, photos and shared memories chronicle 100 years of progress, innovation, leadership and an unwavering dedication to learning, for everyone. With so many stories to tell, we decided to categorize our century into three pillars: Transformative Learning, Academic Excellence and Civic Engagement. Through these, we strive to paint the best picture we can of 100 years of impact on our students, faculty, staff, alumni and the city we love to call home.

Transformative Learning

We believe in the transformative power of higher education and its ability to empower people to improve their lives, their communities and the world.

Students come to UBalt with a purpose that goes well beyond a degree—they want to write their own story. In a welcoming community, they learn to turn their lived experiences into opportunities, in the workplace and in their communities. At UBalt, there are men who pour themselves into educational opportunities brought to them through the Second Chance College Program so they can redefine their future despite their past. And there are first-generation and limited income students who seek to break generational curses and find support in scholarships, mentorships and friendships. College can open doors for anyone; UBalt lights the way through.

Academic Excellence

We believe in preparing our students to excel in their professional, volunteer and personal settings through a balanced and practical real-world education. It’s not enough to be good—we strive for excellence in everything we do.

Students who graduate from UBalt’s rigorous academic programs are well prepared for the companies they go on to run, the governments they shape, the worlds they create, and the courtrooms and nonprofits where they change lives. They take the lessons of their coursework—strengthened by mentorship from faculty members with decades of experience—to raise the bar in their own work and lives.

Civic Engagement

We believe civic engagement is a fundamental human duty. We learn not only in the classroom. We learn by walking the streets of our neighborhoods, volunteering at local organizations, coming to the aid of those who are looking for a helping hand in and around our community.

We couldn’t really be a University of Baltimore if we weren’t also for Baltimore. Our students don’t have to be from the city to feel and to appreciate its rhythm. This comes through the University’s commitment to highlight the people and places that make the city great and weave its own community into those people and places through service-learning classes, days of service, and student engagement organizations.
